Seoul: In the early hours of Monday, North Korea fired two ballistic missiles, escalating the already tense situation between Pyongyang and Seoul. The South Korean military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launches, with the first short-range missile detected early in the morning, followed by a second unidentified missile ten minutes later.

In response to these actions, South Korea has heightened its surveillance and coordination with the United States and Japan. The North’s official news agency has yet to confirm the launches.

This development follows North Korea’s recent unsuccessful test of a multiple warhead missile, which exploded mid-air according to South Korea. Relations between the two Koreas are at a low point, exacerbated by Pyongyang’s increased weapons testing and retaliatory actions, including sending balloons filled with trash across the border.

South Korea has fully suspended a military treaty aimed at reducing tensions and resumed loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts near the border. Additionally, concerns are rising over North Korea’s growing alliance with Russia, highlighted by a recent summit between Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin.

On Sunday, Pyongyang criticized joint military drills by South Korea, Japan, and the US, likening them to an “Asian NATO” and warning of severe consequences. The “Freedom Edge” exercises involved ballistic missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, and cyber training, which North Korea views as rehearsals for invasion.

“North Korea’s missile launches are becoming so frequent, they should start their own delivery service!”
